Headaches and Migraines

Urgent Care for Headaches and Migraines

Practically everyone has experienced what it’s like to have a headache at least once in their lives. For some, headaches come frequently and can range from mild to severe in nature. While chronic headaches are not uncommon, a severe headache that lasts for more than just a few hours warrants a visit to ConvenientMD.

What Causes Headaches and Migraines?

There are a variety of different common types of headaches, including tension, sinus and cluster headaches. These can form due to a number of different causes, including stress, fatigue, sinus infection, alcohol use and more. Migraines are a particularly severe manifestation of headache caused by abnormal activity in the brain—it can result in strong symptoms that cause disruption to daily life under many circumstances.

What are the Symptoms of Headaches and Migraines?

With most common headaches, symptoms include the following:

  • Band-like Pressure or Pain
  • Typically Mild Ache in Back of Head or Upper Neck
  • Stiffness
  • Tenderness
  • Sensation of Tightness

Migraines tend to bring on more severe symptoms, such as:

  • Throbbing or Pounding Pain
  • Pain that is One-sided
  • Pain Worsened With Movement
  • Sensitivity to Light and Smells
  • Nausea/Vomiting

If headache is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, medical attention should be sought immediately:

  • Confusion
  • High Fever
  • Vision Changes (Blurred Spots, Flashes, Double or Blurred Vision)
  • Extremely Stiff Neck
  • Focal Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Speech Changes

Diagnosing and Treatment of Headaches and Migraines

Diagnosing headaches and migraines starts with a conversation about symptoms and medical history, followed by a physical examination. Unfortunately, lab or x-ray tests cannot be used to confirm the presence of migraine headaches.

Most headaches can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications. For those who suffer from chronic, severe migraines, a visit to a specialist and evaluation for migraine-specific medications may be recommended.

Pediatric Considerations

Migraines in children tend to be more bilateral (ie: both sides of the head) than in adults, with episodes sometimes lasting as long as 72 hours. As pediatric patients usually have less severe attacks than adults, basic analgesic medications are often prescribed as treatment.
