Wonder What It’s like Working as an Urgent Care Nurse?
Working as a Registered Nurse, your life can be fast paced and unpredictable, especially if you work at an urgent care clinic. So you’re wondering, what is my day going to look like compared to other nursing jobs?

As an urgent care nurse, you’ve completed all of the same education and licensure requirements as any other Registered Nurse but you serve patients with urgent needs and are considered outpatients. Just like most medical facilities, what you’re going to experience changes every day and makes for an exciting and unpredictable work environment. Urgent care nurses should be able to work in a fast-paced environment and continuously re-prioritize tasks, depending on the situation. Every patient starts with “triage” by a Nurse or trained clinical team member, where you gather general information and assess their case.
During your shift you’re going to be seeing a multitude of patients experiencing different afflictions but at the minimum you can be expected to perform these tasks:
- Drawing blood samples (phlebotomy)
- IV insertion
- Medication administration by various routes including Monoclonal Antibodies
- Patient education regarding their diagnosis and at home care
- Performing point-of-care testing as well as hematologic lab studies within our mid-complex lab
- Wound care and dressings, as well as assisting providers with minor office procedures
- Chaperoning and assisting with Women’s Health exams
- Vision/hearing testing
- Administration of immunizations
- Drug screen testing
- Occupational Health testing: breath alcohol testing, lift testing, pulmonary function testing, Tuberculosis screening
- Assessment of wounds, suture and staple removal when appropriate
When you’re not in the exam room actually treating a patient, you are:
- Assisting with patient call backs including answering questions, reporting test results, and medication/therapy changes
- Assisting with calling in prescriptions
- Reporting Communicable Diseases
- Maintaining accurate, complete records and reports
- Interacting with patients with kindness and maintaining their confidentiality by upholding HIPPA laws and rules
Working in an urgent care clinic as a Registered Nurse is similar to that of an emergency room nurse, where the environment of an urgent care clinic involves constantly pivoting to different ailments, which makes it a great option at any point in your career.
