What to Expect as a New Medical Assistant

Becoming a Medical Assistant is a great segue way into the medical field without the requirement of lengthy degrees. The Medical Assistant is provided with on the job education and skills of medication administration, patient education and general clinical skills. With urgent care and primary care clinics opening regularly, the outlooks on job growth are promising with constant job opportunities. As a Medical Assistant, you are a vital position in the healthcare industry.
On the clinical side, Medical Assistants work closely alongside Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants as well as other clinical team members, and can expect to perform various tasks such as:
- Phlebotomy
- Basic laboratory rapid test processing (in house lab)
- Collecting and preparing lab specimens for outside lab
- Cardiac Management through application of 12 Lead ECG and Basic Life Support
- Wound care, dressing application and removal of sutures and staples
- Triage to include chief complaint, obtaining patient history, med list, vital signs and reporting off to provider.
- Preparing patients for examination
- Assisting during the examination
- Vaccine administration
- Occupation Health testing including hearing, vision testing, lift testing, Breath Alcohol and Urine Drug testing, pulmonary function testing and Tuberculosis screening
- Ear irrigation
- Application of knee, wrist, ankle splints, sling fitting, crutch fitting
- Instructing patients about after care
Outside of the examination room, you can expect to do the following tasks:
- Prepare and administer medications as directed by a provider within Scope of Practice
- Calling in prescriptions as directed by a provider
- Patient communications
- Using computer applications and answering clinic phones
Medical Assistants assist a patient through most of their clinic experience while exhibiting a sense of calm and reassurance.
