What It’s Like Working As An Urgent Care Technician (Paramedic)

As an Urgent Care Technician, no day is the same so if tackling new challenges excites you, this might be the job for you. 

Urgent Care Technician

At ConvenientMD, Urgent Care Technicians have all of the same education and licensure requirements as other paramedics and you are able to serve patients experiencing life-threatening conditions within the clinic. You work as an in-clinic paramedic with a National Registry Certification and typically works in 12-hour shifts. The UCT is provided with the education and skills of advanced patient assessment for the management of various illnesses and traumatic injuries, airway management, intravenous therapy, and pharmacological interventions. The UCT also functions as the lead team member in a ConvenientMD clinic when a Registered Nurse is not present and works as part of the clinical team completing all shared responsibilities and tasks within their scope of practice.

Duties of an Urgent Care Technician

The daily tasks of a UCT range widely and can involve reacting quickly at a moment’s notice. You are helping patients that are experiencing different illnesses and injuries throughout the day but can expect to do the following tasks:

  • “Triage” – taking a complete history and completing vital signs
  • Oral, intramuscular or intravenous administration of multiple medications including antibiotics, anti-emetics, anti-inflammatories as well as Monoclonal Antibody Therapy for COVID-19
  • Patient education regarding their diagnosis and at-home care.
  • Phlebotomy for outpatient lab draws as well as Urgent Care patients
  • Inserting/running IV’s and IV medications
  • Performing point-of-care testing as well as hematologic lab studies within our moderately-complex lab
  • Wound care and dressings, as well as assisting providers with minor office procedures such as suturing and abscess drainage
  • Overseeing and assisting with women’s health exams
  • Perform various occupational health tests including visual acuity, depth perception, color blindness, pulmonary function testing, lift testing, urine drug screens, breath alcohol testing and tuberculosis screening.
  • Suture and staple removal

When you’re not in the exam room treating a patient, you are:

  • Assisting with patient call backs including answering questions, reporting test results
  • Working in cooperation with the other clinical team members such as RN’s, LPN’s, certified medical assistants, radiology techs, clinical care techs (AEMT’s) and testing techs
  • Reporting Communicable Diseases in compliance with federal, state and local regulations
  • Interacting with patients with caring kindness and maintaining their confidentiality by upholding HIPAA laws and rules

Wonder What It’s like Working as an Urgent Care Nurse?

Working as a Registered Nurse, your life can be fast paced and unpredictable, especially if you work at an urgent care clinic. So you’re wondering, what is my day going to look like compared to other nursing jobs?

As an urgent care nurse, you’ve completed all of the same education and licensure requirements as any other Registered Nurse but you serve patients with urgent needs and are considered outpatients. Just like most medical facilities, what you’re going to experience changes every day and makes for an exciting and unpredictable work environment. Urgent care nurses should be able to work in a fast-paced environment and continuously re-prioritize tasks, depending on the situation. Every patient starts with “triage” by a Nurse or trained clinical team member, where you gather general information and assess their case.

During your shift you’re going to be seeing a multitude of patients experiencing different afflictions but at the minimum you can be expected to perform these tasks:

  • Drawing blood samples (phlebotomy)
  • IV insertion
  • Medication administration by various routes including Monoclonal Antibodies
  • Patient education regarding their diagnosis and at home care
  • Performing point-of-care testing as well as hematologic lab studies within our mid-complex lab
  • Wound care and dressings, as well as assisting providers with minor office procedures
  • Chaperoning and assisting with Women’s Health exams
  • Vision/hearing testing
  • Administration of immunizations
  • Drug screen testing
  • Occupational Health testing: breath alcohol testing, lift testing, pulmonary function testing, Tuberculosis screening
  • Assessment of wounds, suture and staple removal when appropriate

When you’re not in the exam room actually treating a patient, you are:

  • Assisting with patient call backs including answering questions, reporting test results, and medication/therapy changes
  • Assisting with calling in prescriptions
  • Reporting Communicable Diseases
  • Maintaining accurate, complete records and reports
  • Interacting with patients with kindness and maintaining their confidentiality by upholding HIPPA laws and rules

Working in an urgent care clinic as a Registered Nurse is similar to that of an emergency room nurse, where the environment of an urgent care clinic involves constantly pivoting to different ailments, which makes it a great option at any point in your career. What to Expect as a New Medical Assistant

On the clinical side, Medical Assistants work closely alongside Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants as well as other clinical team members, and can expect to perform various tasks such as:

  • Phlebotomy
  • Basic laboratory rapid test processing (in house lab)
  • Collecting and preparing lab specimens for outside lab
  • Cardiac Management through application of 12 Lead ECG and Basic Life Support
  • Wound care, dressing application and removal of sutures and staples
  • Triage to include chief complaint, obtaining patient history, med list, vital signs and reporting off to provider.
  • Preparing patients for examination
  • Assisting during the examination
  • Vaccine administration
  • Occupation Health testing including hearing, vision testing, lift testing, Breath Alcohol and Urine Drug testing, pulmonary function testing and Tuberculosis screening
  • Ear irrigation
  • Application of knee, wrist, ankle splints, sling fitting, crutch fitting
  • Instructing patients about after care

Outside of the examination room, you can expect to do the following tasks:

  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a provider within Scope of Practice
  • Calling in prescriptions as directed by a provider
  • Patient communications
  • Using computer applications and answering clinic phones
