At ConvenientMD, Urgent Care Technicians have all of the same education and licensure requirements as other paramedics and you are able to serve patients experiencing life-threatening conditions within the clinic. You work as an in-clinic paramedic with a National Registry Certification and typically works in 12-hour shifts. The UCT is provided with the education and skills of advanced patient assessment for the management of various illnesses and traumatic injuries, airway management, intravenous therapy, and pharmacological interventions. The UCT also functions as the lead team member in a ConvenientMD clinic when a Registered Nurse is not present and works as part of the clinical team completing all shared responsibilities and tasks within their scope of practice.
Duties of an Urgent Care Technician
The daily tasks of a UCT range widely and can involve reacting quickly at a moment’s notice. You are helping patients that are experiencing different illnesses and injuries throughout the day but can expect to do the following tasks:
- “Triage” – taking a complete history and completing vital signs
- Oral, intramuscular or intravenous administration of multiple medications including antibiotics, anti-emetics, anti-inflammatories as well as Monoclonal Antibody Therapy for COVID-19
- Patient education regarding their diagnosis and at-home care.
- Phlebotomy for outpatient lab draws as well as Urgent Care patients
- Inserting/running IV’s and IV medications
- Performing point-of-care testing as well as hematologic lab studies within our moderately-complex lab
- Wound care and dressings, as well as assisting providers with minor office procedures such as suturing and abscess drainage
- Overseeing and assisting with women’s health exams
- Perform various occupational health tests including visual acuity, depth perception, color blindness, pulmonary function testing, lift testing, urine drug screens, breath alcohol testing and tuberculosis screening.
- Suture and staple removal
When you’re not in the exam room treating a patient, you are:
- Assisting with patient call backs including answering questions, reporting test results
- Working in cooperation with the other clinical team members such as RN’s, LPN’s, certified medical assistants, radiology techs, clinical care techs (AEMT’s) and testing techs
- Reporting Communicable Diseases in compliance with federal, state and local regulations
- Interacting with patients with caring kindness and maintaining their confidentiality by upholding HIPAA laws and rules
